Evanston was hit with six potentially linked burglaries over the weekend, police said Monday.
Authorities are looking into whether the cases, all unsolved, are connected, said Evanston Police Department Cmdr. Tom Guenther.
“It’s hard to say at this point,” he said. “They could be related, but we’re still under investigation with them.”
Monday’s crime report does not show any arrests in connection with the burglaries.
At least three of the incidents occurred between Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.
Sometime between 5:15 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. Saturday, someone broke into a residence on the 2000 block of Hawthorne Lane by smashing glass on the back door, Guenther said. Nothing has been reported missing, according to the crime report.
Between 10 p.m. that night and 5 a.m. Sunday morning, an intruder entered a residence on the 2700 block of Lincoln Street, also by breaking glass on the back door. The burglar stole a purse, a key and $42, Guenther said.
At about 2 a.m. Sunday, a resident of a building on the 2200 block of Sherman Ave. awoke to the sound of an intruder. She started yelling, and the burglar ran away before police arrived. Before leaving, the intruder stole a Mac laptop, an iPod, headphones and a purse, the crime report said.
Four other burglaries are listed in Monday’s crime bulletin, three of which took place last weekend. On Friday, someone stole a laptop from a residence in the 100 block of Ridge Ave. . Either Friday or Saturday, someone broke into a residence on the 1500 block of Wesley Ave., but nothing has been reported missing, according to the crime report. Sometime between Wednesday and Sunday, an intruder stole shopping bags, clothing and a suitcase from a residence on the 1900 block of Sherman Ave. .
Burglaries in Evanston were down 25 percent in 2008 compared to 2007, Guenther said.
There were 861 reports of burglary in 2007, according to that year’s Police Crime Index. While the 2008 report has not been released, a 25 percent decrease would mean there were 646 such incidents that year. In 2006, there were 853 burglaries.
In the wake of the recent incidents, Guenther urged residents to lock their doors and be vigilant.
