Northwestern finished with a 3-1 overall record at the Big Ten Match Play Championship last weekend in Coral Springs, Florida. The Wildcats began the tournament as the eighth-seeded team and ended with an overall fifth-place finish.
In its opening match, NU defeated Penn State with a 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals. After two wins and two ties, the 3-3 match was decided by a total points tiebreak.
NU fell 4-2 to top-seeded Illinois in the quarterfinals.
The Cats went on to beat Iowa 3.5-2.5 in a consolidation bracket.
On the final day of the tournament, the Cats beat Purdue with a 3-3 tiebreak.
Freshman Eric Chun finished the weekend with a 4-0 record. Chun finished the tournament 20-under with 26 birdies and only three bogeys out of a total of 56 holes. Chun was voted to the All-Tournament Team by the conference’s coaches.
The Cats play next in the Puerto Rico Classic tournament in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 27, 28 and March 1.
