New Associated Student Government guidelines passed Wednesday will require senators to hold weekly office hours and meet in “caucuses” of different types of student groups.
The legislation, which passed 26-10, was passed to make senators more accountable to their constituents, said ASG external relations director Samir Pendse.
“There’s still a perception that ASG is out of touch,” Pendse said. “Actually, it’s a reality.”
Other requirements of the legislation include sending e-mail updates after each Senate meeting, holding open forums with their constituents once a quarter and posting updates to bulletin boards in residence halls.
Pendse said these regulations will ensure senators do what might seem to be common sense.
“Unless it’s formalized and mandatory, it doesn’t happen,” he said. “Some senators do it, and they’re the few and the proud.”
