Researchers in critical care and pulmonary medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine believe that people in certain risk groups may suffer heart attacks and strokes within 24 hours of exposure to heavily polluted air in Beijing, the site of the Olympic Games.
“If the air quality is bad, you are more likely to have serious heart disease related evants,” said Gokhan Mutlu, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine, in a Northwestern press release. Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and lung disease.
