The winningest women’s basketball coach in Atlantic 10 history is bringing his talents to Northwestern.
George Washington coach Joe McKeown will replace Beth Combs as the Wildcats’ coach, The Washington Post reported Monday. According to nusports.com, McKeown’s hiring will be officially announced today at a 2 p.m. news conference.
In his 19 years with GW, McKeown compiled an impressive 441-154 record. He brought the team to the Sweet 16 three times and reached the Elite 8 in 1997. Last season, McKeown guided GW to a 27-7 season and reached the Sweet 16 before a loss to Rutgers.
The move came just a year after McKeown extended his contract at GW through 2014.
McKeown won more games last season than Combs did in her four-year career at NU. She finished with a 24-95 record and won just seven games in the Big Ten.
