Richter’s job for the past year has been to book the bands that will perform on Dillo Day, which is this Saturday.
First of all, how did you get the job?
I worked for Mayfest and A&O Productions, and I was able to prove myself. My hard work paid off as a freshman and sophomore. I am music-savvy enough to know not only what’s current, but also what students like.
How does the process for picking the bands work?
I pick a committee. I interviewed 36 people and picked three to be on the committee and come up with 100 artists. We come up with this massive list with artists that are feasible, and then we make the calls. People become unavailable because of touring, they can’t do the date, or they’re too expensive, so we narrow it down to 10 artists and then we choose the best.
What made you apply for the job?
I love Dillo Day. It’s great to be able to spend weeks calling people and then being able to see them come to campus. I love working with agents. I booked Flight of the Conchords, and it’s really fun to work hard on a band and see your effort be 100 percent paid off. I hope it works for Dillo Day.
What do you like the most about your job?
It’s so much fun to work with bands and musicians that you have on a pedestal; musicians are fun.
How will this Dillo Day be different?
It will be really different because of the setup of the stages. The size will be more compact, and there will be a lot more of a festival feeling than in the past. It will be a lot more professional, like you paid $200 for a ticket, but it’s free! Also, the consistency – this will be the first time ever that all the bands have such a strong fan base at NU.
What are you most excited about this Dillo Day?
I can’t decide. I am excited to see all the bands, which are a rare mix of throwbacks and great up-and-coming bands. I can’t wait to see the mass of people singing along. I am excited to sing along like a dork to the headliner, Third Eye Blind, like a 12-year-old because it’s the perfect thing to do on Dillo Day. I am excited for it to be over because I want to start working on next year’s Dillo Day!
