What do you do as an assistant stage manager?
My job involves not only doing all the little things that my stage manager requests, but during the show, the other ASM and I actually run the show backstage. We deal with the people and the set. We make sure the actors have their props, the set pieces go on and offstage, the flys come in and out on time … it’s our job to make sure the show goes on without a hitch.
Tell me about “Skylines.”
It’s a musical revue that travels from New York to Los Angeles, then ends up back in Chicago and ultimately Evanston. It’s absolutely hysterical, and it’s definitely a show that I think everyone would enjoy. Some of the humor is pretty universal.
Is the job what you thought it was going to be?
It’s definitely been a lot more work than what I initially anticipated. I knew I would have to be at every rehearsal and know every detail of this show, but I never expected it would be so difficult. But now I know this show like the back of my hand – if you blindfolded me, the crew and I could run this show backwards and forwards.
What is your favorite part of the show?
There’s a song called “Sunday Morning in L.A.,” that’s all about how these tabloid magazines are the new Bible in Hollywood. And I’m from L.A., and it is so true. It’s easily my favorite song in this show.
If you had to be a tabloid magazine, which one would you be?
I guess I would be People, only because it’s not, like, entirely trashy. It’s got its trash, for sure, but it’s not as dirty and dishonest as the others. So I have trashy elements to myself, but I’m not entirely trashy. I think.
How has this changed your Spring Quarter?
I’ve missed out on some of the great experiences from my fraternity, my dorm, other student groups I’m in, but I know that once Waa-Mu is all over, everything will be back to normal. I’ve missed my friends, but I know (they’ve all been) pretty supportive when I’ve been so busy, and they’re all really excited about the show.
What’s the worst that can happen during a show?
I’ll be honest: We only have four crew members, including myself, running the backstage. If any one of us isn’t there, then the show physically could not happen.
