Imagine if your average daily routine included meetings with multiple administrators, logging countless hours in Norris and responding to 50 to 75 e-mails, and no, that doesn’t include reciprocating Facebook wall posts.
Up until last week, that was Jonathan Webber’s reality. Now, he’s passed the torch of ASG president to Neal Sales-Griffin, who also goes by his catchy initials, NSG. “Being ASG president is a full-time job,” Webber says. “It was a lot of fun, but you see how much time it takes for things to change.” During his term, the Weinberg senior estimates he met with more than 50 different administrators. “There are so many interests involved and things to navigate through,” he says.
Webber finished his term with a couple of high-profile announcements. The hard-won fruits of Webber’s labors included a Saturday intercampus shuttle and a mid-winter Dillo Day for the upcoming school year. “Lots of days you feel like you don’t get anything accomplished,” he says. “But in the long run, it’s a pretty cool feeling to know that you really did effect change.”
Thus far, Sales-Griffin, a SESP junior and BIP minor, hasn’t been thrown any curve balls. Yet. NSG has quickly gotten used to late nights in Norris’ third floor ASG headquarters and has become an inbox junkie in his own right. During his first week in office, Sales-Griffin asked his colleagues what they would keep if the ASG office burned down. Sales-Griffin and his ASG cohorts sifted through piles of files dating back to the 1980s, paring down the paperwork overload. “First we start with the office, then the committees, next the Senate, and eventually Northwestern,” he says.
This spring, Sales-Griffin plans to improve unification among student organizations and make sure ASG is running smoothly but will leave the biggest tasks for the fall. “That way we can hit the ground running and collaborate better with the incoming freshman class,” he says.
Thanks to Webber, those lucky 2012ers have something to look forward to during NU’s bleak winter. And if NSG’s tidying-up skills are any indication, they can expect even more.
