Weinberg junior Harris Sockel was awarded the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship, which will pay for his doctoral studies in English.
The award was established in 1971 by the board of directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company and selects motivated students to pursue research in their field of study. Each scholar receives $4,000 before entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending.
“It is the premier award that an undergraduate looking forward to a career in the humanities can win,” said Elizabeth Pardoe, associate director of the Fellowship Office.
The Beinecke selection committee accepts one nomination from over 100 institutions nationwide. Of those nominees chosen, 22 scholars are selected for their 2008 class.
Sockel also won the scholarship last year to pursue studies in philosophy. He will be sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the Circumnavigators Club and Northwestern to traverse the globe while conducting research on a topic of his selection.
“(Sockel) has a voracious appetite for learning and giving of himself,” Pardoe, Weinberg ’92, said.
