Northwestern’s two biggest players next season will be freshmen.
6-foot-9 Davide Curletti and 6-foot-11 Luka Mirkovic signed national letters of intent with the Wildcats Monday night.
Curletti, a forward from Orchard Lake, Mich., and Mirkovic, a Serbian center who played his last year of high school ball in LaPorte, Ind., fill an immediate need for the Cats in the post. NU played last season without a player taller than 6-foot-8 and had no natural centers on the floor.
The frontcourt duo joins highly-ranked recruits Nick Fruendt and John Sherna in the Cats’ 2008 recruiting class. All four figure to play big roles for the team next season as it looks to recover from a disappointing 8-22 record and 1-17 record in the Big Ten.
Curletti chose NU over Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan, according to recruiting Web site Scout.com. He averaged a double-double for St. Mary’s Preparatory School, leading the school to its second straight Catholic League championship this season.
Mirkovic excelled in his one season playing at La Lumiere School. He averaged 25 points and 15 rebounds per game and has been rated as high as the No. 4 prospect in Indiana for the 2008 recruiting class.
