A 65-year-old woman is in”critical condition and a firefighter is also in the hospital after a house fire a mile from campus Monday afternoon. The woman is unconscious, while the firefighter has a left shoulder injury, firefighters at the scene said.
The woman, Mary Gibson, was carried out of the house by a police officer as firefighters were arriving to the fire at 3:20 p.m. at 2115 Wesley Ave. in Evanston, said firefighter Ron Shulga. She was on a ventilator when she was taken to Evanston Hospital, 2650 Ridge Ave.
The firefighter, Capt. Robert Wagner, was also taken to Evanston Hospital after he fell headfirst down the stairs, said Shulga, a 26-year employee of the fire department. Wagner has an injured wrist and shoulder and is on his way up now to get X-rays and a CAT scan, said Evanston Fire Department Division Chief Samuel Hunter.
The entire block was filled with smoke in the minutes after the fire, said neighbor Michael Polski, who called the fire department.
“I ran in the house and saw a curtain of black smoke,” Polski said. “I was like, ‘no way, no way.'”
Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire, which they said started in a first floor bedroom.
