Coming on the heels of a win over No. 1 Georgia Tech, No. 3 Northwestern (4-0) has shown no signs of cooling off. The Wildcats began the ITA Indoor Championships on Thursday in Madison, Wis., by defeating No. 12 Fresno State, 4-1.
The Cats dropped two of their three doubles matches, with their only win coming at the No. 3 spot, where Maria Mosolova and Nazlie Ghazal downed the Bulldogs’ Vanessa Heroux and Jacqueline Haskett, 8-2.
But NU dominated its singles matches. At the No. 5 spot, Ghazal easily defeated Vanessa Heroux, 6-4, 6-1. The Cats took over the match when No. 9 Georgia Rose defeated Fresno State’s Anastasia Petukhova, 6-0, 6-4.
Suzie Matzenauer put the Cats ahead 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Heroux. The match was clinched when NU’s Samantha Murray topped Renata Kucerkova, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Three singles matches were all the Cats needed to give the Bulldogs their first loss of the season. NU hopes to continue its winning ways when it faces No. 7 California at 3:30 today.
