National Student Partnerships, a student-run group in Evanston, will offer free tax preparation and filing services for people with incomes less than $39,000 per year, NSP said in a press release.
The service is provided as part of the federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The tax assistance services will be available from Feb. 4 to April 15 by appointment.
The 15 NU students who staff the organization’s office at the Evanston One-Stop Center, 1615 Oak Ave., are all IRS certified and trained by a certified public accountant. The organization also helps residents with resumes and job searches.
Community response to the tax assistance program has been good, said Weinberg senior Chris Svendsen, who is one of two local directors of the Evanston office along with Blair Schwab, a SESP senior.
“People were calling us as soon as we came back from winter break, even before we announced we were offering the service again,” he said.
This is the fourth year NSP has offered free tax services. Last year, student volunteers filed 135 returns with an average refund of $1,050 per client.
Volunteers said they hoped the program would help teach basic tax skills to Evanston residents.
