A suspect was arrested Friday in connection to the rape of a Northwestern student that occurred the night of May 8 on Simpson Street, according to a press release issued by the Evanston Police Department.
The man, identified by police as 24-year-old Darryl Deshwn Preston, of 2108 Dewey Ave., had a tentative profile match to the DNA evidence processed at an Illinois State Police crime lab, the report said.
When detectives found a pawn shop listing with information leading to Preston, detectives were able to locate him, the release said.
On the night of the attack, a man forced the 22-year-old Evanston resident into her apartment at the 1200 block of Simpson Street after approaching her from behind and covering her mouth with his hand. He threatened to kill her if she screamed, Bellino told the Daily in May.
The assailant then searched the apartment for valuables, walking behind the victim and pulling a piece of clothing over her face. He then forced her into a bedroom and raped her, Bellino said.
The man tied her hands behind her back with a telephone cord and took her cell phone with him, Bellino said. The victim called police and was taken to an emergency room in Evanston Hospital.
The press release said Preston is being tried for the felonies of home invasion, residential burglary, aggravated criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint.
Bail is set at $750,000, and Preston’s court date is scheduled for August 16 at the Skokie Courthouse.
