The Students Publishing Co. recognized two Daily staff members Tuesday with awards for excellence in journalism.
Medill senior Michael Beder received the fourth William J. Eaton Memorial Award, which recognizes a Daily staff member for dedication to the newspaper each quarter. Beder, who joined The Daily as a freshman before working his way through four editorial board positions, has served at The Daily for each of the 11 quarters he has spent on campus.
William Eaton, Medill ’51, worked for The Daily from 1947 to 1951. Eaton won a Pulitzer Prize in 1970 and served as the Moscow bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times. After Eaton died in 2005, friends collected $4,000 to create a memorial award for future Daily staffers. The editorial board nominates a staffer each quarter, and the Students Publishing Co. Board of Directors selects the winner of the $500 award.
Daily co-photo editor Tommy Giglio won the Kay Krieghbaum Memorial Photographic Contest, which grants $100 to the best photograph taken by an NU student each academic year. The Weinberg sophomore’s winning photo showed construction at the Davis CTA station and ran in the October 25, 2006, issue of The Daily.
Kay Krieghbaum, Medill ’69, was a former Daily photographer who was killed in a hit-and-run accident.
SPC also named Medill junior Emmet Sullivan the editor of The Summer Northwestern. Sullivan is the currently an assistant editor for PLAY.
A campus committee selected Weinberg junior Nathan Dapeer and Medill juniors Baley Phelps and Kimberly Weisensee to be the student SPC Board members for the 2007-08 school year.
