EmPower Yourself Greek Week Fashion Show

EmPower will host a fashion show from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to promote a positive body image among Greek women.

All proceeds from the show will go to the Evanston Shelter for Battered Women and Their Children.

EmPower is a Pan-Hellenic Greek organization that exists to promote discussion within the sorority system about issues relating to women.

“We deal a lot with body image, preventing eating disorders and dealing with issues of sexual and physical health,” said Medill junior Lyz Keating, public relations chairwoman for emPower and a former Daily columnist.

The fashion show will feature models “of all shapes and sizes,” Keating said.

Models will wear outfits donated by American Rag, Francesca’s Collections, Northwestern Apparel and Crossroads Trading Co..

The group will also raffle off several outfits from designers, such as American Rag and Northwestern Apparel. Raffle tickets cost $5 and include food. Entrance to the event is free.

Memorial Day Volleyball Tournament

Zeta Tau Alpha and Delta Upsilon will hold a team volleyball tournament on South Beach from 11 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Monday.

Six-member teams can register until the day of the event for $30. Half of the proceeds will go to DU’s philanthropy, Teach for America, and half will benefit Zeta’s philanthropy, the Zeta Foundation.

Teams can “sponsor” themselves or be sponsored by another person for an additional $10. Sponsored teams will receive free food and Gatorade, as well as a free raffle ticket.

Because the event will take place on Evanston property, no other concessions will be sold.

Raffle and competition prizes include Starbucks gift certificates, a bag from Beck’s Books with about $200 worth of merchandise, and Ben and Jerry’s gift certificates.

Beta/Kappa Tennis Tournament

On May 19, Beta Theta Pi and Kappa Kappa Gamma held a mixed doubles tennis tournament to raise money for an Evanston soup kitchen.

The event took place from noon to 5 p.m. at NU’s outdoor tennis courts. Thirty-two teams participated in the event.

Weinberg freshmen Spencer Friedman and Jourdann Lubliner won the tournament.

The first place prizes were tennis bags donated from Wilson Sporting Goods and Head Tennis Racquets.

“I felt confident, but there was also really good competition, towards the end especially,” Friedman said.

The event raised $511.
