ZBT to Fence-In for charity

Zeta Beta Tau will host its annual Fence-In fundraiser Saturday to benefit its philanthropy, the Leukemia Research Foundation.

For the event, ZBT will fence-in their yard for a large, outdoor party. The party will include a raffle, a tailgate and live music from the bands Real Lunch, the HighEnd Trio, Hillside Manor and the X-Factors.

ZBT will charge $3 admission for the event. With admission comes two free raffle tickets, and additional tickets cost $1 each. Gift certificates, t-shirts, and either an iPod or a Nintendo Wii are set to be raffled off.

ZBT began the fundraiser after NU student Jonathan Schatz was diagnosed with leukemia in 1990. Schatz was a member of ZBT and organized a bone marrow drive for a 3-year-old girl from Chicago who was also diagnosed with the disease. Schatz died in 1991.

“It’s more of a personal connection for people in the house than some of the other philanthropies,” said Weinberg freshman Lucas Artaiz, who planned this year’s event.

Treasure Hunt Beach Party

Alpha Chi Omega and Phi Kappa Psi hosted Treasure Hunt Beach Party 2007 on May 12. The event took place on North Beach and benefited the Evanston Battered Women’s Shelter.

Although the event was cut short due to cold weather, it raised $1,700.

Admission was $5, and there were raffle tickets available for $1 each. All raffle prizes were donated by Evanston businesses, and included gift certificates for the Red Door Spa and Le Peep.

French Horn Rebellion performed at the event, and Jamba Juice donated 100 free smoothies.

“It was a little cold so we wound up ending a little early. … But everyone seemed to enjoy it,” said Medill sophomore Kaitlyn Rowney, who planned the event.

Theta/Lodge Throwdown

Last Saturday afternoon Kappa Alpha Theta and Chi Psi hosted the Theta/Lodge Throwdown at the Lakefill to benefit Theta’s national philanthropy, Court Appointed Speech Advocates. Events included field games and food.

The philanthropy works to represent abused and neglected children in a legal setting. Volunteers work with abused children in order to help them improve their living conditions.

Although final numbers are not yet totalled, the event raised about $1,000. About 200 people participated in the event in teams of 4-6 members.

“It was kind of a big mob of people running around playing games,” said SESP sophomore Mollie Schoenwald, who planned the event.

A record-breaking 59 teams competed in games, including a wheelbarrow race, a potato sack race and tug-of-war.
