Light the Way

At sunset Sunday, Zeta Tau Alpha sorority is planning to line the sidewalk from Norris University Center to The Arch with luminaria in honor of Mother’s Day. The candles are “in memory or in honor of mothers,” said philanthropy chairwoman Alyssa Greiman, a Communication freshman.

Zeta’s annual philanthropy is Think Pink, which gives money to promote breast cancer awareness and education to the Zeta Foundation.

Zeta will sell pink ribbons for $1 in the Technological Institute and in Norris. Zeta is also selling shirts for $5 that say “Real Men Wear Pink.”

Dog Days

Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity is set to host Dog Days from May 8-12 to benefit the American Cancer Society. Fraternity members will sell hot dogs and soda at The Rock and at Tech. The events will culminate in a competition on May 12 at Deering Field. Activities will include a hot dog eating contest, relay races and a water balloon contest. Teams of four can register for $40.

Pi Phi Pie Phight

Pi Beta Phi sorority will host its annual Pie Phight from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on May 13 at the Norris South Lawn. Teams of four can enter for $20. Booths will include a pie-eating contest, slip-and-slide, whipped cream relays and a pie throwing contest. The money raised will benefit Literacy Chicago.

Watermelon Bust

Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Zeta held “Watermelon Olympics” on May 5 to raise money for Mary Lou’s Place, a shelter for battered women and their children run by the Evanston/North Shore YWCA. The annual Watermelon Bust included a wheelbarrow race and a tug of war over a pool of watermelon guts.

The event drew the most participants in its history at NU, Weinberg sophomore Lee Lamers said – 100 people competed in 25 teams of four people each.

In all, the event raised $525 for the shelter.
