On The Screen: Year Of The Dog

Jason KlorfeinThe Daily Northwestern

Last summer, my friend introduced to me to “puppy porn.” No, the puppies didn’t having sex, but the DVD I saw was made by two Israeli producers who had captured (from over 60 hours of footage, supposedly) video of puppies of different breeds, BEAGLES! PUGS!, doing various things. It was cute, but really weird, and a 5-minute montage of newborns sucking on the mama dog’s teet made for a very uncomfortable peep show. Luckily, there’s nothing that in Year of the Dog, the directorial debut of the very funny, perceptive Mike White (The School of Rock, Chuck and Buck). The film follows nice, sweet Peggy’s (Molly Shannon) development, and mental breakdown as an animal rights activist after her beagle dies, and while its full of adorable dogs, this is one of the funniest/saddest films I’ve seen in a while.
