Dance Fever

Students sick of hearing “Fergilicious” and “This is Why I’m Hot” on constant rotation at every campus party have an alternative next Friday.

The second annual Israel IndepenDANCE party April 26 will feature DJ Adorno of Chicago’s Reserve nightclub playing Israeli rock, hip-hop and techno. The all-night dance party at Tommy Nevin’s Pub (1450 Sherman Ave.) hopes to unite the Jewish community and their friends through music.

“We really try to make this party apolitical so people don’t feel like they’re coming there to support a cause or not support another cause. They’re just coming to have a good time,” says Weinberg junior Mitchell Bekritsky, the IndepenDANCE coordinator.

More than 350 people attended last year’s event, and organizers hope to build on its success.

“Last year was great,” says Medill senior Daniella Cheslow, who planned the first IndepenDANCE. “There was a lot of energy. At one point I looked over at the bar and there was just a huge crowd of people moving. You couldn’t tell the bodies apart.”

Organizers are getting the word out with a publicity campaign that includes posters, postcards, a Facebook group and a Web site -www.independanceparty.com – where students can request songs to be played at the party.

We’ve been in touch with WNUR, AEPi (Northwestern’s Jewish fraternity) and the Israeli Consulate, who all agreed to co-sponsor the event, says Cheslow.

Greater attendance will translate into more money raised for this year’s beneficiary, Magen David Adom – the Israeli Red Cross.

Organizers say they hope that the promise of a night full of great music will make the IndepenDANCE party a success for a second year in a row. At the very least, students can look forward to a night without MIMS blasting from the speakers. The event starts at 10 p.m.
