A visiting French scholar shared his findings regarding European welfare states with about 30 Northwestern graduate students and professors in Scott Hall on Friday.
Bruno Palier, the director of Joint Policy between the Sciences Po Paris and NU, is teaching a graduate level course, Politics of Western Europe, this quarter. The presentation was his first on the topic since arriving in the country Wednesday evening.
The speech, titled “The Politics of Welfare Reform in Bismarckian-Continental European Countries,” summarized the Bismarck Project, a joint study between 29 European universities that Palier leads. Since 2005, the project has examined the development of welfare systems in France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Spain.
