In the vast auditorium, the students of the 18-piece jazz ensemble look like toy dolls onstage. Under the bright stage lights, several of the teenagers clutch hefty horns, while a young woman with cornrows balances a gleaming flute on her lap.
“A-one, a-two, a-you know what to do!”
Suddenly the trumpets are bleating, the piano is tinkling, the saxophones are chattering, the cello is bouncing, and the drum is going boom, bang, swish. The joyous, effervescent sound of jazz is swarming through the aisles and settling into the seats, and the conductor is hollering for more.
Jazz enthusiasts gathered Saturday at Evanston Township High School for the fourth annual Evanston Jazz Festival. The school played host to musicians from 12 high schools
