Got the winter blues only a week after returning to campus? Take advantage of the time you’ve got before midterms kick in and laugh it up by seeing the following performances in Chicago:
For $12 (with a valid student ID), be sure to check out the musical improv stylings of “Baby Wants Candy: The Completely Improvised Rock Opera” this Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Apollo Theater (2540 N. Lincoln Ave.). Having once included the likes of Seth Meyers (of SNL fame) among its ranks, this comedy troupe uses a live band to create an original hour-long show based off the first title suggested by the audience.
Think love is a joke? So does sketch comedy group The Cupid Players. Catch their current show “Cupid Has a Heart On: A Musical Guide to Relationships” Saturday at 10:30 p.m., and watch their satirical take on what happens when their group’s namesake comes into your life and runs amuck. Performances take place at The iO Theater (3541 N. Clark St.), and tickets are $14.
If you’re a fan of Clue, this show is for you. The Chicago Improv Anarchy, a local comedy troupe, performs “Murder … By Improv” at the Stage Left Theatre (3408 N. Sheffield). This comedic mystery is set up by the audience members, who suggest and vote on what will happen next. Catch this show tonight at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Over at the Beat Kitchen (2100 W. Belmont), you can catch stand-up comedy with an alternative twist. Each Tuesday, Chicago Underground Comedy presents five different comedians with quirky senses of humor that manage to slip in some intellectual commentary. You won’t be hearing the usual “What’s the deal with?” jokes at this show. Tickets are $5 and the show is at 9 p.m. Ages 21+.
