Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls is a movie musical dream come true. The film explodes onto the screen with booming voices, brilliant costumes and impressive acting. Though today’s musicals are often hard to take seriously, Dreamgirls is able to break out as a superbly reinvent musical cinema.
The film is based on the Broadway musical of the same name and tells the story of an all-girl trio of singers trying to make it big in the 1960s. The Dreams – as the trio is called – are based on real-life superstars The Supremes.
The movie begins with enterprising manager Curtis (Jamie Foxx) discovering the trio at an amateur show and convincing them to open for James “Thunder” Early (based on James Brown), played by a surprisingly spectacular Eddie Murphy.
When Curtis later decides to take the girls solo, attitudes begin to collide. In a bold move, Curtis chooses to replace the large leading lady Efie, (American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson), with the more beautiful Deena (Beyonc
