Northwestern’s chapter of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority will close at the end of Spring Quarter because of low membership, according to a release issued by Kyle Pendleton, director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Fraternity and Sorority Life is in the early stages of seeking a new sorority to join NU’s Greek system.
The national headquarters of the sorority voted to close it after visiting the chapter on campus. The decision “stems from financial and operational difficulties relating to low membership numbers,” according to the release issued at the end of March.
“It’s upsetting when a chapter leaves campus,” said Lisa Juarez, Communication junior and president of the Panhellenic Association. “Alpha Delta Pi was an important part of our community, and it’s sad to see them leave.”
Sara Kelly, Weinberg junior and president of NU’s chapter of ADPi, said she could not disclose the number of members currently in the sorority. She also said she did not “care to comment” on how she felt about the sorority’s closing.
At the end of this academic year, members of the sorority will receive alumni status, which is usually given to members of fraternities and sororities when they graduate, Kelly said.
Members will not be able to join a different sorority because “once you’ve joined a sorority, it’s a lifetime commitment,” Juarez said.
NU is in the process of extension, or finding a new sorority to bring to campus, Juarez said. Letters were sent to sororities not represented at NU to explain the search and to provide basic information about NU sororities.
A committee will review interested sororities in June and select three to visit campus for a formal presentation in the fall. If a sorority is chosen, it will not participate in formal recruitment next January, Juarez said.
