Evanston/Skokie School District 65 announced chairs for its two school board subcommittees last week.
Board member Jerome Summers will chair the board’s finance committee and board member Marianne Kountoures will chair its program and policy committee.
The program and policy committee reviews proposed changes to the district’s curriculum, instruction and school structure before they reach the full board for a vote.
For months the committee discussed the controversial proposal to start an African-centered curriculum on a limited basis in local schools.
Kountoures said she was “happy to serve” as the chairwoman of the committee.
“I look forward to working with the superintendent and the board and the community,” she said.
Kountoures said the committee has not yet decided what it will discuss in the near future.
The finance committee deals with the district’s portfolio of bonds and other holdings as well as budget projections.
Summers said his main goal is to maintain a balanced budget for the district.
“I do not want to be the one who ends up with an unbalanced budget on my watch,” Summers said.
