ART IN THE SALON

As You Like It is a salon where you can get everything from a haircut to a pedicure to a facial, all while viewing local art.
The gallery has two collections now: an exhibit of vintage quilts owned by Evanston resident Christine Bowman and a series of nature and country photographs by award-winner Jerrold Goldberg of Skokie.
The historical quilts reflect the lives of the American women who made them, while Goldberg’s photographs focus on the beauty of the American countryside.
Salon owner Patt Murray said she has been combining art and a salon setting since 1979.
“I’m an artist, and I wanted to integrate all of my interests into one place,” she said.
She said she changes the exhibits, which typically include 30 to 40 pieces, every two to four months.
You don’t have to purchase a salon service to view the art either, Murray said. People who are not clients “are welcome and invited to come.”
All pieces are available for purchase, she said.
A MAN AND HIS GUITAR
Pick a Cup Coffee
1813 Dempster St.
April 1, 8-10 p.m.
Free (artist will have a tip jar)
April 1 may be a day of jokes and pranks, but Evanston singer/songwriter Bruce Holmes will be performing his “No Really Concert” at the cafe where you can quite literally pick a cup for your coffee.
Holmes will play songs from his new album, “Life’s an Intelligence Test,” a collection of eclectic, original music. This is his first album.
“It’s me and a guitar,” he said.
Holmes said that although his show should evoke some laughs, there is “nothing inherently April Fools-y about it.”
Holmes performs everywhere from coffeeshops to concert halls and enjoys “feeling connected to people” when he plays, he said.
“The reason you get into this line of work is that you have views of life that you want to share with people,” he said.
Holmes has been a guitarist for more than 40 years. He will be playing at gigs across the Midwest throughout the spring and summer, including Evanston’s Central Street Festival on July 9.
