Northwestern coach Randy Walker stayed in the program to find the Wildcats’ next offensive coordinator, as he promoted wide receivers coach Garrick McGee to the position.
McGee, 32, served as NU’s wide receivers coach for past two seasons. He replaces Mike Dunbar, who left the Cats to take over California’s offense.
Last season, McGee helped lead the Cats to the top-ranked passing offense in the Big Ten. Senior wide receivers Mark Philmore and Jonathan Fields were tied for fifth in the conference in receptions per game, while junior Shaun Herbert was sixth in the Big Ten in receiving yards per game. The offensive prowess also led to senior quarterback Brett Basanez being named the media’s Big Ten offensive player of the year.
McGee, a former Oklahoma quarterback, has been a coach since 1996. He made stops at Northern Iowa, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Toledo and UNLV before coming to Evanston.
Walker is expected to announce a new offensive line coach and wide receivers coach tomorrow afternoon.
