The hiring of Des Moines, Iowa, Superintendent Eric Witherspoon as the new District 202 superintendent is not final, Evanston Township High School’s Board of Education officials said Wednesday.
The board voted 4-3 to hire Witherspoon at a Monday meeting. Witherspoon accepted the board’s offer after meeting with board members Tuesday evening to address any concerns.
A final decision on Witherspoon’s hiring is dependent upon a site visit to Des Moines by several ETHS board members, ETHS spokeswoman Kathy Miehls said.
Miehls said the board could withdraw their offer if they are not satisfied by their visit to the Iowa district.
ETHS School Board President Mary Wilkerson could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.
ETHS School Board Vice President Ross Friedman said a press release on Witherspoon’s hiring was inaccurate.
An addendum to Tuesday night’s announcement about Witherspoon was released Wednesday. As of the afternoon it had not been posted to the ETHS Web site.
“The addendum (to the press release) was sent out because we forgot to include that the contract was conditioned on a site visit,” Friedman said.
Witherspoon, who served as Des Moines superintendent for the past eight years, accepted the board’s offer Monday to fill the vacancy left by Allan Alson, who will retire June after 14 years as the ETHS superintendent.
