The back cover of Tim Burton’s newly released Charlie and the Chocolate Factory DVD asks, “What wonders await you in Willy Wonka’s factory?”
Regardless of the wonderful factory, no wonders await you on the DVD.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory provides just three mediocre extras. The seven-minute documentary on how hundreds of Oompa Loompas were created from one man is slightly intriguing at first, but it shapes up to be little more than a pat on the back to Deep Roy (who plays all the Oompa Loompas) for all the hard work he put into learning the dance moves. The other extras include the theatrical trailer and a pointless Oompa Loompa dance section that teaches viewers some ridiculous routines.
On top of the lack of interesting extras, the film itself loses a bit of its magic outside the theater. The larger-than-life aspect of the fanicful world of Willy Wonka goes the way of Mike TV when shrunk to a 30-inch TV screen.
Johnny Depp’s stellar performance as Willy Wonka is the only reason to watch this DVD. If you saw it in theaters though, there’s no need to view it again.
This lackluster DVD is better left at the video store.
