Two roommates returned to their apartment on the 1600 block of Ridge Avenue on Sunday afternoon to find both of their laptops, their iPods and a digital camera missing, according to an Evanston Police Department report.
The two Northwestern students told police they locked the doors while they were away from their apartment between 3:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Police said they could find no signs of forced entry into the residence.
This is one of several break-ins to student off-campus residences in the past week. The incident occurred in an area where many students live.
A burglar entered an apartment on the 1400 block of Elmwood Street on Thursday afternoon while two music graduate students were sleeping inside. A laptop, a wallet and various computer accessories were taken from the residence. The wallet was found inside the apartment building and returned. The laptop has yet to be found.
Despite multiple accounts of burglaries, students expressed little concern about the thefts.
“Safety is always a concern,” said Brian Lee, a McCormick senior who lives on the 1000 block of Garnett Place. “We lock all doors and windows. You just need to be smart about it.”
Lee said he is more concerned about travelling the distance to campus at night.
“People have to walk kind of far (when they stop by), but we all have cars,” Lee said.
Break-ins have already occurred around Lee’s apartment in the two weeks since he moved in. Although he is aware of the incidents, Lee said he still feels safe.
“I’ve heard about some break-ins, but I’m not really concerned,” Lee said.
