The Associated Student Government Senate is preparing to vote Wednesday night on funding recommendations made by the Student Activities Finance Board for 15 remaining student groups.
Last week, senators began voting on the $771,051 in SAFB recommendations for student groups for the 2005-06 year. The money is partially funded by the Student Activities Fee, the $120 fee each student pays with tuition. Appeals will also continue for money from the $40,000 in reserve funds.
ASG Financial Vice President David Kim said he doesn’t expect this week’s meeting to go any differently than last week’s, when the majority of student groups’ appeals were heard. At ASG’s last meeting seven groups received extra funding, depleting the reserve to about $22,000, Kim said.
As Wednesday night’s meeting progresses, Speaker of the Senate Dan Broadwell warned that senators will become more stingy with allocating extra money.
“As there is less and less in the pool senators get stricter and stricter with whom they give money to and how much and what for,” said Broadwell, a Communication junior. “No one likes the idea of running out of money on student group 35 and there are still 10 groups left.”
Not all of the remaining $22,000 needs to be allocated tonight, Kim said.
“The Senate has a choice to make,” he said. “Either dole out the money now or keep it to consider for supplemental funding in the fall.”
Two new bills are also on tonight’s agenda. The first proposes installing more U.S. Bank ATMs on campus.
The second bill would change who approves the student groups applying for Senate seats. ASG’s Executive Committee currently makes the approvals. Under the new bill, three of the 12 members of the Executive Committee, three members of SAFB, the rules chairman and president would be involved in the decision to grant a new Senate seat, Broadwell said.
