Cats drop 4 to Big Ten’s best team

BASEBALL

It took one inning for the Wildcats to find out what they were dealing with in this weekend’s series at first-place Illinois.

The Fighting Illini (31-14-1, 18-6 Big Ten) sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 21-4 victory Friday. They went on to sweep the four-game series from Northwestern (21-23, 10-14) in blowout fashion, outscoring the Cats 59-18.

“We ran into a buzz saw,” NU coach Paul Stevens said. “We just didn’t pitch very well, and that was the difference in this week. Every time we made a mistake in the zone they hit it a long way.”
