Besides the fact that I’m not a fan of sports, I’m also not a fan of beer-guzzling, middle-aged men groping me. Thanks, but I’d rather peruse Northwestern’s nonexistent social scene than wait for the hammered banker to ask me if I’m wearing space pants.
Forget the sketchiness of places like The Union because the Hunt Club, 1100 N. State St., blends the right amount of sports and style. This upscale sports bar with its wine, cocktails and beer is more the lovechild of club and pub, with a little something for everyone.
The Hunt Club opens to an airy space with a large bar, stools and a pool table. If watching sports on one of the six flat screens or three big screens leaves you pining for the more traditional bar scene, a downstairs floor puts a club spin on an otherwise sports bar-esque atmosphere with funky couches and blue Christmas lights.
Beware: Televisions also line the wall downstairs, making it possible for non-sports fans to be ignored yet again. But these television screens around the club aren’t loud enough to hear any commentary, so there’s still hope for mingling. And for those rabid sports fans, the played-out Top 40 music isn’t loud enough to interfere with game-watching.
Entrees include the typical pub grub — nachos, burgers, salad and pasta — and range in prices from $6 to $15. But this isn’t fine dining, so you’re better off coming for a beer or two and catching a game.
The Hunt Club is open 11 a.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday. No cover charge.
