Results are based on paper surveys distributed in person Monday to 546 undergraduate students by pollsters standing near university buildings on the Evanston Campus. Each pollster surveyed every fourth person who walked near their designated building.
Although only 546 students responded to the survey, 904 students were asked to participate — a response rate of 60.3 percent. This response rate does not skew or bias data because it is unlikely that those who did not respond chose to do so because of the survey contents.
Margin of error: Each question’s margin of error was calculated using a scientific method. The margin of error for Question 1 (“Were you aware that Associated Student Government elections are occurring on Tuesday, April 13, before reading this question?”) is 4.3 percent.
The margin of error for Question 2 (“Do you plan on voting in this year’s ASG election?”) is 4.3 percent. The margin of error for Questions 3-6 (which asked those respondents that plan to vote who they will vote for) is 5.4 percent.
Other possible sources of error: The sample percentage of students who reported they plan to vote — 63.7 percent — could be higher or lower than the actual turnout on Election Day because the information was self-reported.
Question wording and practical difficulties in administering the surveys also can introduce error or bias into the findings of all public opinion polls.
