In its last Big Ten regular season game of the season, the Northwestern women’s basketball team will be out for revenge as it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face Michigan tonight.
The contest, which tips off at 7 p.m. at Crisler Arena, is a rematch of the Jan. 4 game in which the Wolverines (11-16, 4-10 Big Ten) came back from a 25-24 halftime deficit to win 62-43. The Wildcats committed 23 turnovers and gave up 21 offensive rebounds, which opened the door for the comeback.
“We didn’t take care of the ball or rebound today, ” NU coach June Olkowski said after the embarrassing loss. “We gave up a lot of extra possessions to a fighting Michigan team.”
The Cats (8-18, 1-14) are coming off a terrible 73-46 loss at Minnesota on Sunday. The Gophers scored 45 points in the first half and coasted to victory.
Rebounding and turnovers were again the weakest link for NU, as the Cats committed 18 turnovers and gave up 15 offensive rebounds.
The one strong point of the Cats’ performance in their first meeting with Michigan was their ability to hold All-Big Ten and All-America candidate Jennifer Smith below her scoring average. Smith needs five points tonight to become the all-time single season scoring leader at Michigan.
If NU can once again contain Smith, the team will have a good chance at stealing a victory. The Cats also must follow Olkowski’s keys to every game: taking care of the ball and executing on offense.
A win also would go a long way in building momentum for NU heading into the conference tournament, which starts March 4 at Conseco Field House in Indianapolis.
The Cats likely will be the 11th seed, and a victory in the season’s last game might be what they need to get a little bit of momentum going.
