Two months after Associated Student Government senators passed a bill requesting a tuition increase of $25 for a student athletic fee, University President Henry Bienen said the measure should be presented to the Board of Trustees for consideration later this month.
“I suspect it’s going to happen,” Bienen said in a meeting with The Daily on Friday. “It’s thinking innovatively, which I appreciate, and I like that.”
The $25 tuition fee would allow students to attend every home football and basketball game. The fee would be implemented as a test run for the first two or three years if it is approved by the board, Bienen said.
“Whether it will have a big impact on attendance is an empirical question,” he said.
Sara Whitaker, a sorority senator and author of the bill, said she has received positive feedback from administrators. The fee will encourage student turnout at athletic events, she said.
“I think it’d be successful,” said Whitaker, a Communication junior. “I know that with each new class that comes into the system, it will only get stronger, and hopefully that will be a big positive for community-building.”
