In an effort to encourage more students to vote in local and national elections, Associated Student Government members began registering students to vote Friday at Norris University Center.
Twenty-seven students registered during the two-hour session, said Rainbow Alliance Sen. John J. Hughes.
Most students aren’t determined enough to walk to the City Clerk’s Office at 2100 Ridge Ave. to register, said Hughes, a former Daily Forum editor who serves as a board member for Students Publishing Co., which oversees The Daily. About 50 ASG members were authorized during Fall Quarter to register voters on campus.
To participate in the Illinois primary election in March, voters must register by Feb. 17. Voters will choose a candidate to replace U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, and Democrats will vote for a candidate to challenge President Bush in November.
This Tuesday registrars will be at University Library from 5 to 7 p.m. On Friday, students can register at Norris, the Technological Institute and various dorms from noon to 2 p.m. Students need to bring two forms of identification — one with a photo and one including their address in Evanston, such as a piece of mail from NU.
