A Chicago man was shot and killed late Tuesday about four blocks west of the Howard Street El station, police said.
An official with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Shawn Bland, 22, who lived just blocks from where he was killed.
Bland and another man were standing in front of Tasty Sub, 2001 W. Howard, at about 11 p.m., when two men opened fire, said Sgt. Edward Alonzo of the Chicago Police Department. Bland was shot in the chest and the other man, 23, was hit in the head.
After the shooting, which happened on the Chicago side of Howard, both men were taken to St. Francis Hospital, 355 Ridge Ave., Alonzo said. Bland was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, and the other man was listed in critical condition. A hospital employee could not update the other man’s condition Wednesday because police had not released the man’s name.
An employee at Tasty Sub said he did not know anything about the incident. Several calls to Bland’s residence went unanswered.
Alonzo said Chicago Police Department, not Evanston Police Department, will lead the investigation into the shooting.
Ald. Ann Rainey (8th), whose ward borders the section of Chicago where the shooting took place, expressed grief over the incident. She added that it was unlikely to attract the same attention as other recent crimes that have happened near campus.
“I’m devastated,” she said. “But I’m certain we won’t get the press that Northwestern students get.”
