Freshman Matt Grevers won three individual events, while junior Louis Torres and senior Tony Swanson each won two as the Northwestern men’s swimming team edged out Indiana 148-140 at the Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center on Saturday.
The meet pitted two ranked teams, as No. 22 NU and No. 21 Indiana traded blows all throughout the meet.
In the end, Greevers’ victories in the 200-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke were the difference for the Wildcats, who bounced back nicely from a 203-97 beating from Minnesota the week before.
Torres took both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events while Swanson won both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Greevers, Torres and Swanson teamed up with sophomore Mike Hamming to take the 400-yard medley relay.
The meet was so close that it came down to the final race, the 500-yard freestyle.
Although Indiana’s Richard Bryant took the event, freshman Brian Davis and sophomore Dan Williams took second and third — good enough for NU to hang on for the eight-point win.
The NU women’s swimming and diving team also met the Hoosiers on Saturday, but Indiana won nine of the 12 events to cruise to a 182-116 win.
For the Cats, junior Katie Simmons took the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.18. Sophomore Ashley Carter and freshman Leanne Dumais took first and second in the 3-meter diving event, while sophomore Christy Olin and freshman Kristen Kilroy did the same in the 200-yard butterfly.
Both the men’s and women’s teams travel to Madison, Wis., to take on Wisconsin on Thursday.
Wrestling
Freshman Jake Herbert surprised the competition as he took first in the 174-pound class at the Michigan State Open, held on Saturday and Sunday in East Lansing, Mich.
Herbert, unseeded and in his first collegiate performance, upset two seeded wrestlers on his way to winning the 174-pound chamionship. Herbert took down No. 4 Kevin Carr of Central Michigan and No. 5 Matt Palmer of Columbia before defeating Pittsburgh’s Francis Iorfido to win the title.
Four other NU wrestlers also placed in the annual individual tournament that does not keep team score.
No. 6 John Velez placed fourth im the 125-pound division, freshman Ryan Lang placed third in the 141-pound class, senior Josh Ballard stole second in the 149-pound competition, and sophomore Matt Delguyd finished seventh among 197-pounders.
The wrestling team is back in action on Nov. 22 when it hosts the NU Duals.
Fencing
Freshman Mai Vu led all Cats with a 19th place finish in the sabre competition as NU competed in the Junior World Cup, a three-day event that completed on Sunday in Louisville, Ky.
Sophomore Sharon Sullivan was Nu’s other top-25 finisher, placing 21st among all epeeists.

Wang finished 33rd out of 53 in the foil competition, while Pasternak finished 45th out of 53 in the sabre competition.
