The Northwestern men’s golf team will wrap up their fall season today and Tuesday at The Prestige at PGA West.
The tournament, played at the La Quinta Resort Mountain Course in La Quinta, Calif., includes 15 teams, all of which are in the top 100 in collegiate golf. Texas Christian is the defending champion of the tournament.
The event is co-hosted by Stanford and California-Davis and features four days of festivities, including an awards dinner, a golf clinic, and a Collegiate-Am tournament.
The Wildcats have already had some success in California this year. After leading the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., after 36 holes, the Cats went on to a season-high second place finish.
NU’s Bryson Young also had a career-best performance at the outing, shooting a 7-under 206 to finish in second place. The Cats have had three different golfers finish in second place this year.
“Each week we have been doing better and better, so if we keep doing that we’ll be all right,” senior Tom Johnson said. “We have the momentum, but it has been a while since our last tournament.”
The Prestige at PGA West will not be the last tournament of the fall season for every NU golfer, though. Johnson received an invitation to play in the prestigious 29th Annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on Nov. 23-25.
Johnson will be first golfer from NU since Jim Benepe in 1985 to compete in this tournament, which will be played at the El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas, and fields the top 29 golfers in the country every year.
In is in his fourth year as a member of the NU men’s golf team, Johnson has twice been named an All-American. He also holds second place on NU’s career stroke-average list (72.55) behind Luke Donald, a current PGA professional.
“The field is awesome, and it is real honor to be playing in this tournament,” Johnson said.
