The Northwestern swimming teams dove into the pool at the Norris Aquatics Center for the first time this season and made an immediate splash.

The men’s team tallied 220 points on the day, outscoring Wisconsin-Green Bay, who finished second, by 45 points.

On the women’s side, NU posted 208 points, topping second-place Illinois by 26 points.

The NU men won all 11 events, while the women claimed first-place finishes in all but four.

Freshman Matt Grevers wasted little time in putting his name in the NU swimming record books. In the first home meet of his career, Grevers broke the pool record in the 100 backstroke. He posted a split of 49.08 in his leg of the 400 medley relay and broke former NU swimmer Brian Walters’ mark of 49.17 set in 1999.

Grevers was a part of the 300 back relay team that posted a first-place time of 2:33.99, almost 10 seconds faster than the next best finish.

The women’s team posted first-place finishes in each of the four medley events.

On the men’s side, Wisconsin-Milwaukee finished third with 169 points, and Illinois-Chicago rounded out the field with 159 points.

Wisconsin-Green Bay’s 176 points were good enough for a third-place finish on the women’s side. Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Illinois-Chicago tied for third place with 161 points each.
