NU alum hits British Open, but fails to reach final round

A former Big Ten Golfer of the Year from Northwestern competed last week in the British Open. Although he did not make it to the final round, Luke Donald teed off with tough competitors, including Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia.

Called one of “the brightest in British golf” by the London Times, Donald is living up to the legacy he left at NU. Due to his strong position at the Western Open, he was one of 15 players exempt from the 36-hole qualifying rounds held June 17-18.

Despite a throng of autograph-seekers and stiff competitors, Donald remained calm when the game began.

“I’m good at being focused and cutting everything else out — it’s part of my personality to be one-track minded,” Donald, a British native, told the London Times.

But after two days of golf, Donald finished his last round at 76, 13 over par. To qualify for the final round, golfers had to score less than 8 over.

Donald played golf all four years he was at NU. From 1997-2000, he remained in the top 20 NCAA collegiate golfer rankings. He was the Big Ten Golfer of the Year in 1998 and 1999.

Donald capped off his four years by attending the British Open in 1999 and becoming the number one ranked national collegiate golfer in 2000.
