The city of Evanston on Tuesday morning will begin construction of a new water main along Emerson Street between Sheridan Road and Orrington Avenue.
This construction is necessary before any further repairs can be made on the sewer system, said Richard Figurelli, superintendent of the city’s Water and Sewer Division.
In an e-mail sent to students Friday night, Northwestern’s Office of Facilities Management told students there would be a four-hour stoppage in water service for part of campus starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
But Figurelli said there will be no immediate effects on the water service for residents living both on and off campus in the vicinity of Emerson Street.
“The only time there would be a (water) stoppage is when repairs are being done,” Figurelli said. “And usually this would only last for two hours or so.”
The city would contact residents affected by the sewer repairs, Figurelli said.
Figurelli said water mains like the one at Emerson Street sometimes become old and have to be replaced to “guarantee a high quality and good supply of water.”
Constructing a new water main also will ease the repair process, Figurelli said. “We replace the main first and then don’t have problems with the transfer of water.”
