Due to construction delays, Evanston’s already patient blues fans will have to wait yet another month to enjoy Bill’s Blues Club.
Originally set to open in mid-April, then mid-May, the club at 1029 Davis St. is now scheduled to be ready by the middle of June, owner Bill Gilmore said. This most recent postponement for Evanston’s first blues club comes from a miscommunication with the builders that resulted in delays with the installation of the ventilation equipment.
Gilmore said this was just a technical holdup.
“The ventilation was just an an internal communication problem,” Gilmore said. “It could have been resolved much earlier.”
He said the real problems came months earlier when trying to find an appropriate space for the club.
“When you look at spaces downtown, there aren’t many spaces for a club like mine,” Gilmore said.
With more than 25 years of experience as a blues-club owner, Gilmore said he usually converts old one-story bars for his businesses. This prevents complaints from neighboring residents or businesses above. Finding such a one-story location in Evanston was difficult, he said.
Obtaining the appropriate liquor license was another challenge.
Under Evanston law a live-music venue cannot serve alcohol unless the kitchen stays open. Gilmore originally proposed a new type of license that would bypass the food requirement, but said he abandoned the idea when he was told it would probably not get past the liquor board.
Dick Peach, president-elect of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce, said Gilmore was taking the “path of least resistance.”
“It gives them longer hours anyway, and all they have to do is serve sandwiches,” Peach said.
Under the current license, the club will be open Sunday through Thursday nights until 2 a.m. and until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
