I have a good friend named Martha.
She isn’t your typical college girl. She lives off campus. She doesn’t belong to a sorority. She doesn’t even take any classes.
Martha Monray is 56, from Guatemala and rides public transportation 45 minutes every day to get to work. She smiles when she speaks about her four children.
Martha has been part of Allison Hall’s janitorial staff for three years, and, during the past two, I’ve gotten to know her pretty well.
But on Saturday night, something occurred that made Martha’s job very unpleasant. Several Allison residents decided it would be humorous to empty out a full garbage can, dumping its putrid contents into one of the men’s showers. Even worse, they left the water running to drench the refuse.
I wasn’t particularly amused — and neither was Martha. When she arrived to work Monday morning, all she could do was shake her head in disappointment and continue cleaning.
