An Evanston man was arrested last month and charged with fatally stabbing his older brother at a family gathering in Chicago, police said.
Brian Short, 37, of the 200 block of Custer Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder, said Carlos Herrera, a spokesman for Chicago Police Department. The charge is in connection with the death of his brother, John Short, 39, of the 1600 block of West North Shore Avenue in Chicago.
The brothers were visiting at a family gathering March 14 at John Short’s Chicago residence, said Tom Stanton, a spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. During the visit, the two men drank together and played cards.
The brothers then had a fight that was “domestic in nature,” Herrera said.
Brian Short left the room and got a butcher knife from the kitchen, Stanton said. Brian Short re-entered the room where he and his brother had been fighting and stabbed John Short in the chest, Stanton said.
Herrera said police found Brian Short hiding in a closet.
John Short was lying on a couch, Herrera added. He was pronounced dead later that evening.
Brian Short is being held on $500,000 bail, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. He has an arraignment hearing April 15 at the Cook County Criminal Courts Building in Chicago.
