Evanston police cited 13 Northwestern students at a downtown bar early Friday with underage drinking and charged a Kellogg student with battery, police said.
The NU students were among 17 people who received citations at The Keg of Evanston, 810 Grove St., said Cmdr. Michael Perry of Evanston Police Department. All were charged with violation of the city’s underage drinking ordinances.
Daily staffer Jason C. Arican, 19, was among those cited, Perry said.
Police received an anonymous call at 2:15 a.m. Friday notifying them that there were underage customers at the bar who had used fake IDs to gain entrance, Perry said. EPD assembled a group of officers to go into the bar and check IDs.
About half of those cited were charged with violating a city ordinance that prohibits individuals under 21 from purchasing or possessing alcohol. The other half were charged with violating a different ordinance that makes it illegal for those under 21 to lie about their age to buy alcohol.
Anyone who was cited can pay a $75 fine or challenge the citation. If they pay the fine, the city must receive their money by March 5, Perry said. If they wish to challenge their citations, they must appear March 12 at the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., for a hearing before the city’s Division of Administrative Hearings.
Police also arrested Kellogg student Brady A. Busch, 26, during the ID check on Friday and charged him with pushing, grabbing and insulting a female officer, Perry said.
Busch, of the 1200 block of Simpson Street, was charged with battery, a misdemeanor, Perry said.
The female officer was checking IDs when she was shoved from behind, Perry said. Her left arm was then grabbed and she was swung out of the way so that Busch could pass, police said.
According to the police report, Busch told the officer, “Get out of the way, bitch.”
The officer then pushed Busch against the wall and told him he was under arrest, Perry said. According to the police report, Busch responded, “Fuck you.”
The officer was not in uniform but wore her badge around her neck, Perry said. She suffered a small bruise on her left arm.
Busch is scheduled to appear March 19 at Circuit Court in Skokie.
