Thieves broke into five cars and vandals slashed tires on another four between Thursday and Saturday, police said.
All five burglaries occurred early Saturday morning in the 2300 block of Cowper Avenue, said Cmdr. Michael Perry of Evanston Police Department. One victim reported 35 CDs missing, but no other thefts were mentioned.
All five cars were unlocked and parked on the street when they were burglarized, Perry said.
About 2 a.m. Saturday, police found that four cars on Cowper had been entered and ransacked, Perry said. In two cases, dome lights were on in the cars. None of the cars’ owners reported anything missing.
Later that morning, police received word of the fifth burglary, Perry said. A victim reported the CDs missing from a 2001 beige Ford.
Also burglarized were a 2001 silver Ford Escape, a 1995 green Jeep, a 1998 gold-colored four-door Acura and a 1993 black Nissan Altima.
Police have no suspects in the case, though officers stopped four “suspicious people” standing at the corner of Grant and Ridgeway streets shortly before discovering the burglaries, Perry said.
The five incidents probably are related, Perry said.
Late last week, police received reports of four tire-slashings in the 2100 block of Dewey Avenue. Perry said the four incidents are believed to be related, but he did not link them with the burglaries.
The slashings all occurred either Thursday night or Friday morning, Perry said. Five tires were slashed, including the front driver’s side tire on all four cars and the rear driver’s side tire on one of them.
The cars involved were a 1996 blue Chevrolet Corsica, a 1988 maroon Chevrolet van, a 1997 Cadillac Catera and a 1987 Chevrolet Suburban. All the cars were parked on the street overnight Thursday, Perry said.
Police have no leads in either case, and all nine incidents remained under investigation Monday night.
