Norris Bookstore as well as three other Evanston businesses were cited Saturday for selling cigarettes to minors, police said.
EPD officers sent minors to try to buy cigarettes from 60 businesses licensed to sell them, said Cmdr. Michael Perry of Evanston Police Department. Police issued tickets to the four businesses that made the illegal sales.
Also cited were Green Bay Car Wash, 1950 Green Bay Rd.; Golden Olympic Restaurant, 1608 Chicago Ave.; and the gift shop at the Omni Orrington Hotel, 1714 Orrington Ave.
Charles Depondt, an assistant manager at the bookstore, said he did not know enough about the citation to comment.
Angela Palomo, a waitress at Golden Olympic, said the minor attempted to buy cigarettes at a particularly busy time. She said the cashier sold the girl the cigarettes because she recognized her.
“(The cashier) gave her the cigarettes because she had a familiar face,” Palomo said. “She said she’s seen her here before.”
Palomo added that the cashier is from Greece and “does not understand English too well.”
“There were a lot of people in line up there,” Palomo said. “It was too confusing. We didn’t even know what had happened until it was too late.”
Employees at the car wash and the gift shop said Monday that managers were not available to comment.
The Juvenile Bureau of EPD’s Investigative Service led the investigation, Perry said. The bureau, which receives state funds, conducted four investigations of local tobacco sales in 2001, according to police reports. An official report has not been issued for the bureau’s activity in 2002.
Perry said EPD has jurisdiction to investigate cigarette sales on Northwestern’s campus because cigarette licenses are issued by the state. University Police was not involved in the investigation.
Representatives from all four businesses are scheduled to appear Feb. 12 at Evanston’s Division of Administrative Hearings to determine any possible punishment, Perry said.
